چکیده

-Smectites synthesized from experiments at 5.5 GPa and 1500~ are of high quality, crystals are large at >10 p~m, and the 2:1 layers may have a homogeneous charge distribution. Smectite was exchanged with various cations (Na + , Li +, K +, Ca 2+, and Mg z+) and the hydration behavior of each sample was observed by an in situ powder X-ray diffraction method under precisely controlled relative humidity (RH). The smectite showed distinct stepwise (discontinuous) hydration versus RH. During the transition between two hydration states, the coexistence of the two states was observed. Randomly interstratified structures with one and two planes of H20 are time-dependent phenomena and relate to hydration and dehydration processes. Key Words--Crystalline Swelling, Hydration, Interlayer Cation, Smectite.

HYDRATION BEHAVIOR OF Na-SMECTITE CRYSTALS SYNTHESIZED AT HIGH PRESSURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE

-Hydration behavior of Na-smectite crystals synthesized at a pressure of 5.5 GPa and temperatures of 1400"-1500~ was examined by X-ray powder diffraction at various relative humidities (RH) in the range of 0-100%. The basal spacing of the Na-smectite crystal increased stepwise with increase in RH. The reflections observed were only normal reflections of a single or dual hydration states of smec...

Effects of Increasing Potassium Chloride and Calcium Chloride Ionic Strength on Pesticide Sorption by Potassium- and Calcium-Smectite

In aqueous suspension, the affinity of many pesticides for smectites is influenced by the clay properties such as surface area, surface charge density and location, exchangeable cations, and hydration status of exchangeable cations in clay interlayers. The amount and the type of salts present in the aqueous phase influence clay quasicrystal structures and hydration status, which we hypothesize ...

Spectroscopic study of carbaryl sorption on smectite from aqueous suspension.

Sorption of carbaryl (1-naphthyl-N-methyl-carbamate) from aqueous suspension to smectite was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (for batch sorption), and quantum chemical methods. The amount of carbaryl sorbed was strongly dependent on the surface-charge density of the smectite with more sorption occurring on the two "low" surface-char...

Alkali Cation Selectivity and Fixation by Clay Minerals

-Two variables must be considered when calculating exchange free energies (AG~ for 2:1 clays: (1) anionic field strength, as expressed by equivalent anionic radius (ra), and (2) interlayer water content, as expressed by interlayer molality. For smectites that are in a state of high hydration, interlayer molality is determined by the cations undergoing exchange. Thus AG~ for an exchanging cation...

Intercalation and Retention of Carbon Dioxide in a Smectite Clay promoted by Interlayer Cations

A good material for CO2 capture should possess some specific properties: (i) a large effective surface area with good adsorption capacity, (ii) selectivity for CO2, (iii) regeneration capacity with minimum energy input, allowing reutilization of the material for CO2 adsorption, and (iv) low cost and high environmental friendliness. Smectite clays are layered nanoporous materials that may be goo...
